Sculpture for the Birds
While working in the barn with the materials available on the farm during the Andes Sprouts Society Residency, I found myself frustrated by my efforts in the studio (located in a 100-year old dairy barn) were often destroyed by birds and chipmunks, particularly when working with the winter rye that was a cover crop in the fields. So I decided to create a work specifically for them. The red Holi powder (used in a religious festival in India) captured the footprints of mice and birds and the swish of feathers and imprints of dropped seeds. The work was allowed to remain and feed the animals throughout the summer.
